The prison system in Russian society, as well as abroad, has existed since ancient times. Places of detention in the domestic state apparatus have always occupied an important place among other bodies and institutions. The state paid special attention to the use of prison labor as a cheap labor force. This attitude was practiced during the time of the Russian Empire, when there was such an institution of punishment as hard labor. One of the types of prison work that developed in the course of reforming the penitentiary system of Russia after 1861 became prison work, as a more humane type of prison activity for prisoners sentenced to short terms for minor crimes. In this type of punishment, various agricultural works played an important role. Many of them brought a certain income to the state treasury and were encouraged by the government. The practice of using prison labor in agriculture continued later.
